I read the Grishaverse books and now I want an emotional support goat πŸ

Hey! So. This month I decided I would read the Shadow and Bone trilogy, reread the Six of Crows duology and then watch the show. And now that I’ve done that (more or less) I wanted to talk about it. So I’m doing this in two parts, one is the books and the other is the show. Lets do that shall we?

Just to quickly say that there will be spoilers in this post, so proceed with caution…

The Books –

I hate to say it, these did not do it for me. I’m so sorry. These books were not it. Okay to be fair, the first one was brilliant, I liked Alina, I liked Mal, I liked The Darkling. Then I spent so long dragging myself through Siege and Storm, and then DNFed Ruin and Rising. I do plan on going back to it, but just not right now.

Let’s talk about the characters shall we? The only one I can say I adore with my whole entire being is Nikolai because he is the best, and I can’t wait to read King of Scars. The Darkling I thought was alright, he wasn’t anything too special, and Alina and Mal pissed me off so much. Mal more than Alina.

I just have to say this, Mal annoyed the living daylights out of me. In fact the Darkling became the Darkling because he met Mal and that’s his villain origin story. I was team Malina during the first book, but now I’m team “she dies alone” because the Darkling is toxic and Mal is a nuisance. Although Nikolai… Ok no.

Hopefully I’ll gather the courage and remaining brain cells to read Ruin and Rising in September maybe, or at least before Season 2 comes out.

This book is one of the best books ever, this is a hill I will die on. The diversity, the representation, the way its not about a Chosen One but a group of criminals (ok that sounds bad, it’s not) and all of them are lovable, the character development, the beautiful writing, Ketterdam, The Crows, the memorable scenes, The Crows, the funny bits, the group dynamic, The Crows; all reasons I absolutely adore this book. Did I mention the Crows?

I have to say though, it’s really funny compared to Shadow and Bone, because S&B is about all the characters caring about their country and trying to save the world and fight for the greater good, and SoC is a group of teens breaking into this unbreak-in-able (that’s not a word) ice thing, and it’s hilarious. I’ve never put down as many tabs as I have on this book:

This whole book is just a masterpiece and I am in love with it. Jesper is so so insanely funny and witty, Wylan must be protected at all costs, and Nina is The Queen now. We won’t talk about Matthias, he’s only acceptable in Crooked Kingdom, but Inej is the most amazing, beautiful, kind but fierce character ever, and I love her so much.

Okay but Kanej though. I would take a bullet for this ship and that’s not a joke. They are literally so perfect. And Wesper. Wesper is the cutest thing ever, change my mind, you can’t.

But have I mentioned how funny Jesper is? He’s the reason behind 99% of the comedic relief in this book and I am here for it πŸ™Œ

– The Show –

I came for the Crows, stayed for the goat. Milo is now my baby, I’ve adopted him and I will live out the remainder of my life on a farm serving him because he deserves it.

Mal actually became likeable as well!? Like that takes some serious good acting, and Archie Renaux delivered on all fronts. Speaking of which, Kit Young is the real life embodiment of Jesper, they are so similar! And Amita Suman as Inej is so perfect πŸ‘Œ

Although I did want to say, I’m a lot bit disappointed that Six of Crows, one of the most hyped book literally everywhere, not only doesn’t have it’s own show, it’s being overshadowed by Shadow and Bone? And the storyline for the show was so different! To be fair, Leigh Bardugo did say that would happen, she literally called it a high budget fan fiction, so I’m not too mad about that bit, but still, Six of Crows deserved better.

Oh and can we talk about the whole SoC and S&B community? Yes we can, I make the rules here hehe. Everyone is so fun! Like everyone is so funny, and the fan arts are *chefs kiss*

You know what I want to do? Rewatch the show again and while I’m watching it, sort of react to it on here? I don’t know, I think it would be a lot of fun!

This was so much fun to write, I love talking about this series, and I will now be referencing Six of Crows for the foreseeable future on every single on of my posts from here on out. Thank you so much for reading everyone, and have a good morning, afternoon or evening!
